Pre-Employment Transition Services

BEi is partnering with the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) to provide Pre-Employment Transition Services that are designed to help students with disabilities in the Warren County School District and Tidioute Community Charter School region prepare for employment. Pre-Employment Transition Services helps students with disabilities while they are still in high school to identify career interests, practice and improve work skills and explore training opportunities that may be available after graduation. BEi works with local school districts and businesses to provide group services in the classroom and individual services in the community that are available depending on the needs of the student.

Pre-Employment Transition Services

Individual Services

Students interested in receiving Individual Services may apply through OVR prior to their junior year in high school.  These Pre-Employment Transition Services include:

Job Shadowing that enables students to go to a community workplace to observe and learn from people currently employed an occupation of vocational interest. The service provides an unpaid experience for students to also gain a greater understanding of the soft skills that are important to being successful in the workplace.

Work Based Learning Experience (WBLE) provides students with a disability to opportunity perform real work at a community employer and develop new skills in an integrated setting with co-workers with and without disabilities.  These may include in-school or after-school opportunities, summer jobs, experiences outside the traditional school setting or internships. Students are paid an hourly wage for work performed during the WBLE. BEi provides a staff person to supervise and work alongside the student as appropriate.

Group Services

Students are referred for Group Services through their school districts. Students must be between 14 – 21 years of age and do not have to be enrolled in OVR services.  Classes are held during the school day and taught by a BEi instructor.  Topics include:

  • Independent Living
  • Self Advocacy

ESCape (Employment Summer Camp)

ESCape (Employment Summer Camp) is a Pre-Employment Transition Services opportunity for high school students with disabilities in Warren County to explore careers in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields with a focus on the opportunities to pursue these careers in local businesses.

Campers spend the mornings researching market information, education, responsibilities and career outlook for jobs in participating businesses. In the afternoon, students visit participating businesses to observe the various STEM careers researched and interview those currently employed in the field. Each day concludes with a return to the classroom where students compare and contrast their research with what they found in the field.
